Fine Art Models' PRR Broadway Limited Observation Car
The ÒStandard Railroad of the WorldÓ was the claim the Pennsylvania Railroad made for itself at the height of the passenger train era and, in 1938, its flagship train became the New YorkÐChicago Broadway Limited. In 1934, the Union PacificÕs new M-10000 articulated lightweight train conducted a national tour, including stops along the PRR. Seeing the streamlinerÕs acceptance by the public, the Pennsy began considering how to modernize its own passenger service. At first, they hired an engineering firm to develop a high-speed multiple-unit electric train like the M-10000, but then decided its new, bi-directional GG1 Electric Locomotive, hauling conventional cars, would be more practical. They commissioned industrial designer, Raymond Loewy, to style the GG1 and began thinking about a new train for it to pull.Meanwhile, rival New York Central introduced its own first streamliner, the DetroitÐCleveland Mercury, which also attracted press and public attention, whereupon it decided to streamline its flagship 20th Century Limited. Acting quickly, to avoid losing ground in the lucrative New YorkÐChicago market, the Pennsy proposed to the Central that the two roads jointly develop the Century and a new Broadway Limited together. To its relief, the New York Central agreed. Together, the two railroads approached Pullman-Standard to build their new cars, leaving it to Loewy and Central designer Henry Dreyfuss to give the two trains differentiated identities. This they didÑwhile the Century emerged in a conservative two-tone gray, LoewyÕs train featured warm shades of Tuscan red and maroon with vivid yellow and blue accents in the public rooms. The Pennsy bought enough equipment to streamline, not only the Broadway, but also some additional cars for the Spirit of St. Louis, the General and the Liberty Limited. It inaugurated this Fleet of Modernism on June 15, 1938, the same day the new 20th Century Limited entered service.
